Music and Me :)
A Little Bit About Me
Hello there! My name is Maggie and I am going to be in the Diverse Cultures class with you all this semester. I am currently a junior here at converse and my major is Music Ed. My primary instrument is the flute. My hometown is not so far from here, I only live a short 45 minute drive from Converse in Blacksburg Sc. Music has been a very large part of my life ever since I can remember. Since that is the case I love all kinds of different music. My most listened to genres are country, rock, alternative, and soundtracks. Another fun little fact about me is that I am a really big Disney fan, hence the soundtrack music that I mentioned earlier.
Because I listen to a lot of different genres it was honestly hard for me to narrow down what my go to song/artist/genre was but after a long time of thinking I was able to think of something that I have recently really been into. Not very many people I know have either heard of this band or listen to them. I am talking about the band none other than Sleep Token! Sleep token is a band of many genres and because of that their songs are a blend of many. Some of the more notable genres that they use are alternative metal, prog metal, indie pop, R&B, and gospel. Their newest album Even In Arcadia was released on May 9th of 2025. This album was so well received by the public that some of their songs were nominated for Grammys, the two in question were "Caramel" for best rock song and "Emergence" for best metal performance. Out of the whole album it's really hard to choose just one of their songs that I like but if I had to choose I would pick "Dangerous".
I was first introduced to this band back in 2023 while I was scrolling on Tik Tok believe it or not. At that time their album named Take Me Back To Eden had recently come out and people were making videos using some of the songs. The more I listened to them the more I started to love their music. Now they are one of my go tos whenever I need to get anything done whether that be cleaning my room, driving, or doing homework. To anyone reading this I would definitely recommend listening to some of their more popular songs from the new album such as "Caramel", "Damocles", or even "Infinite Baths". It is always fun to explore new artists especially when they mix so many genres!
"What would my walk up song be?" Honestly I had a hard time trying to think of one. There are so many things that I listen to that it makes it really hard to choose something. After some careful consideration I think that my walk up song is going to be "Riot" by the band Three Days Grace. More specifically starting at the timestamp of 0:44 which is the beginning of the chorus. It is a song that can really suck me in and gets me really pumped up when I listen to it. Honestly I think that any other rock song would be a good walk up song. A close second for this would have been "We're not Gonna Take It" from Twisted Sister. I have really fond memories of these two songs with my family so that just makes it even better in my opinion.
Now this next section might be a hot take but I honestly don't really like a lot of the music by The Beatles. I know I know a lot of people really like the Beatlees but I just can't bring myself to really like any of their stuff. Now I still like music that is reminiscent of their style, like the soundtrack from "Cruella" makes me think of their style of music, but for some reason I just don't connect with their music like other people do or like I do with other bands. I think the only song(s) that I like are specifically from John Lennon. Like for example "Imagine" and "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)". I really don't know why I can't seem to get into their music but I think that it's really funny when you ask people about the Beatles because they either really like their music or they don't care for it. I unfortunately fall in the latter category on this. If anyone has a suggestion about one of their songs that they think I might like I would really like to know so just leave a comment!
Bonus!!
I know that I have already written a lot and you are probably tired of reading but I really wanted to include a bonus section. If you have ever taken a Jan Term here you know that if you aren't careful you can really hit a brick wall in the middle to end of the semester. So in order to try and lift your spirits I thought that it would only be appropriate of me to include a genre that can help with improving your mood! Now I actually have two different genres in mind for this purely because there isn't just one genre that can help pick you up and get you motivated. The first genre is K-pop. Yes you read that right Korean pop music is a really fun pick me up genre. Even if you don't fully understand what they are saying some of the time they still have so many different aspects woven into one song such as rappers, melodists, and even lead dancers if you end up watching their videos. When I put this on in the background I usually end up getting a lot of work done and/or I'm no longer in a bad mood. I listened a lot to k-pop back during the summer when I had to get up early and drive to band camp and I was super tired. That was the only thing that kept me awake honestly.
And last but certainly not least is a genre that is a little more or a niche genre but I still love it all the same when I am in a bad mood. The genre I am talking about is hyperpop. As you can see in the genre name it has "hyper" and needless to say this music really lives up to its name. Just a forewarning some of the songs have a lot of cussing which I know that not everyone likes to listen to so just wanted to warn you if you wanted to listen to it.
Welp that's all for this post. Thank you so much for reading and I can't wait to see any suggestions for songs and/or what other people say in their blogs. Let's have a great semester!!!! (*^▽^*)
SOooo, she is a Disney fan😏?!! I would love to know your favorite Disney park and movie! I also have 2 Beatles song recommendations: Here Comes the Sun and Blackbird the remastered versions. They may be overplayed, buuuut they are great songs!!
I am in LOVE with Disney! I actually took the Disney class that was offered back in Jan term 2025 for CCW students and we actually got to travel to Disney and be in the parks for three days. And the greatest part was is that it was for a class!!! I think that my favorite park would have to be the Magic Kingdom (I really liked the Tron ride). I know that that can be a hot take but it really is my favorite! My favorite movie is hard to say but I think that maybe for an animated movie Brave and for a live action probably Cruella. Thank you so much for the song recs, I will make sure to give them a listen. I think that I have listened to the blackbird song before and liked it so we will see 👍
Hiii Maggie!!! I am a huge three days grace fan and riot was one of my pre race songs I would listen to on the bus before a track meet in highschool... terrifying memories Thanks for the new "keep yourself awake during the commute" Kpop song reccommendation, it will be used for that exact purpose
Hey Maggie! I thought your choice of music was very cool. I don't think I have ever heard of Sleep Token. As I was listening to Caramel by them, I immediately added it to my playlist, so thank you for that! Also, I am with you about The Beetles. I am not a big fan of them either.
I'm glad you liked the music! If I can get at least one person to somewhat like sleep token or at least listen to them then I am happy :) and I am so glad to hear of somebody else who doesn't really like the Beatles because most all of my friends love the Beatles.
